Kuuma sauna stove review: the Classic Legacy suits most rooms
Buy the Classic Legacy for an insulated room up to 1,000 cubic feet. The gasification BluFlame isn't UL listed, so check with your county before you order one.

Buy the Kuuma Classic Legacy unless you want Kuuma's gasification stove and your building department will accept an unlisted one. The Classic heats insulated rooms from about 336 to 1,000 cubic feet, costs $2,395 to $2,795 by size, and it's one of only two Kuuma lines with a UL 1482 listing. Lamppa Manufacturing builds every Kuuma at its factory in Tower, Minnesota, from American steel, the maker says. We read Kuuma's product pages and ordering terms and compared every sauna stove it lists.
The best saunas built in the USA
Every Kuuma sauna stove sits in one table
Kuuma sells five lines of wood sauna stove. The table gives each one's price and whether it carries a UL 1482 listing, the safety standard for solid-fuel room heaters that many building departments look for.
| Model | Price | UL 1482 listing | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Legacy | $2,395–$2,795 | Yes | Three sizes for rooms of 336–1,000 cu ft; glass window and ashpan included, rocks extra |
| External Feed | $2,645–$2,845 | Yes | You load the firebox from outside the hot room |
| Low Profile | $2,795–$3,295 | No | Rock surround included |
| BluFlame | $3,995–$4,495 | No | Gasification stove for rooms of 336–900 cu ft; rock surround and rear heat shield included |
| BigBlu | $5,495 | No | Kuuma's largest gasification stove |
Kuuma's own prices for the stove alone, read Oct 10, 2026, before freight, rocks and chimney. Listings are from the spec tables on each model's page.
The Classic Legacy is the Kuuma to buy
The Classic comes in three sizes: small for rooms of about 336 to 512 cubic feet, medium up to 780 and large up to 1,000. Kuuma says a well-insulated hot room reaches temperature in about 45 to 60 minutes. The firebox is brick-lined steel with a stainless baffle, and the glass window and ashpan come in the price, per the Classic page.
We'd choose it for the UL 1482 listing. Some counties won't permit an unlisted solid-fuel appliance in a building, and the serialized label on each Classic gives the inspector something to check.
Rocks aren't included. Kuuma sells them at $50 for a 50-pound box, and the large stove holds up to 140 pounds. The stove needs a 6-inch Class A chimney with no reducers, which you buy separately, and it weighs 375 to 500 pounds, so bring help or a dolly.

The BluFlame burns its smoke a second time
The BluFlame is a gasification stove: it feeds in air to burn the wood gas the fire gives off, a second burn inside the same firebox. With its Banya surround it holds several hundred pounds of rock, and Kuuma's FAQ puts the warm-up at 60 to 90 minutes for 125 to 200 pounds of stone. More hot stone stores more heat for each ladle of water.
It isn't UL listed, according to the BluFlame page. Ask your building department before you order, and expect to pay about $1,600 more than a Classic for a similar room.

Buying a Kuuma takes a quote and a deposit
Kuuma doesn't sell through a cart. You ask for a quote, put down a $1,000 non-refundable deposit, and the stove ships by freight on a pallet with a lift-gate to the curb, for the actual freight plus a $75 pallet fee, per the ordering page. You can also pick it up at the factory in Tower.
Lead times run from several weeks to a few months, and paying by card adds 3%. We'd order in summer to have it firing by first snow.
Kuumas are built on the Iron Range from American steel
Lamppa Manufacturing is a fourth-generation family business in Tower, Minnesota, on the Iron Range. Its ordering page says every Kuuma is built in that factory from American steel, and the Classic's spec table lists Made in America for every size. The SBA named it Minnesota's family-owned small business of the year for 2024, the company says.
Kuuma doesn't say where its firebrick, door glass or cast-iron grates come from. Those aren't what we sort a stove on, and our method page explains why the steel body is.
