The Kuuma Classic Legacy is the American wood sauna stove to buy for a sauna that needs a building permit. It's built in Tower, Minnesota, Kuuma says the steel is American, and it carries a current UL 1482 listing, the standard many building departments ask for. It costs $2,395 to $2,795 by room size. We found three American makers that sell a sauna stove on its own, say where they build it and post a price: Kuuma, Nippa and North Woods Fabrication. That's short of the five a roundup needs, so this guide covers those three properly and names the others we checked.

Three stoves made in the USA, side by side

The table compares the stoves we list. Room sizes are each maker's rating, and the price is the stove alone, before rocks, chimney and freight.

The Kuuma Classic Legacy passes the permit test

An inspector who wants a listed solid-fuel appliance will look for a label, and each Classic carries a serialized UL 1482 one, per Kuuma's page. Kuuma says a well-insulated room comes up to temperature in about 45 to 60 minutes, and the firebox is lined with brick.

It asks for a 6-inch Class A chimney and 48 inches of clear space in front. Shields bring the sides down to 7 inches. Rocks cost extra, and ordering starts with a quote and a $1,000 deposit. Our Kuuma review has every model.

Where to buy

Nippa's Legacy costs less if your county allows it

Nippa has built stoves in Michigan since 1930, and its Legacy Series heats the same range of rooms as a Kuuma Classic for $200 to $700 less, depending on size. Nippa says an insulated room reaches about 220°F (104°C) in 60 to 90 minutes, per the Legacy page.

The UL 1482 reports Nippa posts are about 45 years old, and no current listing turned up when we looked. If an inspector will see the stove, ask Nippa for a current file number before you order. Our Nippa review covers the four sizes.

Where to buy

North Woods Fabrication builds a stove for tents

The North Woods stove weighs 25 pounds, burns logs up to 17 inches long and runs a 4-inch pipe. It's made for a sauna tent or a tiny room of up to 65 square feet, and at 25 pounds you can carry it down to the lake. North Woods calls it "proudly made in the USA" on its product page and names no town.

It has no safety listing, and the maker says so. Keep it out of a permitted building.

Where to buy

Setri's stove only comes with a Setri barrel

Setri, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, ships an external-feed wood stove with its cedar barrels, and its sauna page credits the stove to Range Steel, a shop up on Minnesota's Iron Range. You can't buy one alone, so it's in our roundup of saunas with the barrel it heats.

Where to buy

We left out stoves we couldn't place

Nippa's T-Series tent stoves carry no build statement of their own. A&S Industrial in Chassell, Michigan, sells wood heaters without saying where it builds them. ILO in Dollar Bay, Michigan, says it manufactures on site, and posts no prices. If any of them publishes the missing piece, we'll add it.

The stoves you'll see on most American saunas, like Harvia's M3, are built in Finland. Our method page explains why an imported stove stays off this list while a sauna that ships with one can stay on the other.

How we chose these stoves

For this guide we read the product pages and manuals from Kuuma, Nippa and North Woods Fabrication, plus Setri's sauna page, on Oct 10, 2026. Owner reviews weren't counted here.
